3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Mother
“I can imagine no heroism greater than motherhood.” - Lance Conrad
There is really no way to prepare for becoming a mother, it’s one of the most rewarding and challenging vocations you will ever experience. Believe me I tried. I read countless books, numerous blogs, and quizzed countless friends. I’m a details person and over-prepare for most everything, but there’s truly nothing like motherhood. The journey is filled with highs and lows, but it's undoubtedly a life-changing experience; so here are a few things I wish I’d known before I became a mom.
The unconditional love
The love you have for your child is unparalleled, and it's the most beautiful thing you'll ever experience. I deeply love my husband, but the love I have for my children is like no other, it's an unexplainable feeling that unravels you in ways you never imagined, a love that grows with each passing day. There may be times I do not like or agree with my children’s choices but that love never waivers, not even for a second.
The refinement
I would’ve never dreamed in a million years that becoming a mother would require such heart and soul refinement. The journey of motherhood isn't just about raising your child; it's a journey of self-discovery that’ll change you in ways you never imagined. You'll learn to be more patient, empathetic, and understanding. You'll become more resilient, determined, and driven, and most importantly, you'll become a better version of yourself. You are refining them and they are refining you.
The time warp
Growing up and still to this day, when my mom tells a story she almost always mentions how she can’t believe it happened 10, 20, 50 years ago. “It feels like only yesterday and that time has just flown by.” Typically, I would just mentally roll my eyes. But now I get it. Something changes when you have children. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, the days are long and the years are short. Truly, this describes motherhood perfectly. I look at my children and wonder how they are so big and grown and I secretly wish for time to freeze. The moments are precious with your children, so don’t wish away the season you’re in, try to find gratitude in it.
Motherhood is a beautiful journey filled with unconditional love, self-discovery, and memories that will last a lifetime. Know that every season is different, and if you are wise you will undoubtably learn something new about yourself and your family. Cherish the days that are sweet and learn from the days that are hard…because your time with them passes all too quickly.
